Dry Needling What is it & Why ?
Dry Needling is a technique used by physical therapists for the management of pain and movement impairments.
This technique uses a "dry" needle, one without medication or injection, inserted through the skin into areas of the muscle where taut bands are found.
Other terms commonly used to describe dry needling are Trigger point dry needling, and Intramuscular Dry needling.
Dry needling is not acupuncture, a practice based on traditional Chinese medicine and performed by acupuncturists. Dry needling is a part of modern Western medicine principles and supported by research 1.
What is a Trigger Point?
A trigger point is a taut band of skeletal muscle located within a larger muscle group. Trigger points can be tender to the touch, and touching a trigger point may cause pain to other parts of the body.
Basically trigger points are the fibres of muscle which looses property of contarctibility in response to impulse generated by brain and due to lack of activity in that particular area chemical substances accumulate and causes pain and discomfort.
The Benefits of Dry Needling
Why a newer treatment method is gaining attention—and getting results Despite its scary-sounding name, “dry needling” is a safe, effective treatment involving needles that are the same size as those used in acupuncture.
A practitioner will insert a needle along a client’s trigger points — the tight bands of tissue within a muscle — to promote the body’s own healing mechanisms and improving blood circulation to that particular area.
Sudden flow of blood in that particular area results in heaviness at that particular area for 24 hours to 48 hours and this can be managed by simply application of heat to needled area.
The technique has long been used in Europe, but it’s only in the past 30 years that it’s risen in popularity in the United States.
